Ideal Candidate

Not all persons need an eyebrow lift. The eyebrow position of most individuals remains in a good position for most of their lives when assessed about the superior orbital rim (normal landmark for eyebrow position). However, for many people sagging of the eyebrows can add to the overall appearance of facial aging. Good candidates for rejuvenation of the eyebrows/forehead include persons with at least one of the following: 1) sagging of the eyebrows, 2) sagging of the outer corner of the upper eyelid, 3) horizontal wrinkles across the forehead, and 4) vertical lines between the inner portion of the eyebrows.

A forehead lift is often performed in conjunction with blepharoplasty (in patients with skin overhang in the upper eyelids) and with a facelift to provide a harmonious overall look to the entire face.

Preparation

Patients need to be in good medical condition and do not have medical conditions that can impair healing or increase the risk of surgery. Those conditions include blood-clotting problems, uncontrolled high blood pressure, smoking, and drugs that affect clotting (aspirin, Advil). Your surgeon will give you instructions to prepare for the procedure. Carefully follow these instructions.

You should arrange for someone to drive you home after your surgery, and to help you out for a day or two.

Brow Lift Types

In an eyebrow lift, the muscles that cause the sagging and wrinkles are partially removed to raise the eyebrows, minimize frown lines, and smooth the forehead. There are several techniques for correcting eyebrow position:

CORONAL EYEBROW LIFT, OPEN BROW LIFT

The eyebrows are rejuvenated through an incision hidden well behind the hairline, beginning at the level of the ears and going up across the top of the head. A traditional (coronal) eyebrow lift is a very powerful approach that lifts eyebrows and corrects deep transverse wrinkles across the forehead. The scar won’t be visible.

ENDOSCOPIC BROW LIFT

Dr. Doumit often rejuvenates the forehead with this minimally invasive procedure. Dr Doumit makes five small incisions of 1 to 2 cm, hidden in the hair. With the help of an endoscope (small camera on the end of a thin tube) and other endoscopic instruments, Dr. Doumit repositioned the eyebrows to a desired position and contour. The endoscopic eyebrow lift results in minimal scarring, faster recovery, and a more natural look.

DIRECT BROW LIFT

The eyebrows are rejuvenated with an incision placed above the brow hair. This approach is usually reserved for elderly males.

LATERAL BROW LIFT

A small incision of about 3 cm positioned inside the hair is used to reposition the lateral portion of the sagging eyebrow.

Recovery

Swelling and bruising in the forehead and eyebrow usually last up to 10 days. Dr. Doumit will recommend a cold compress for 48 hours following surgery with your head elevated to about 30 degrees when resting to minimize swelling and bruising. Pain is minimal. All sutures are resorbable. Most patients fully recover within two weeks and return to their normal routine.

Results

It will take a few weeks for the final results to appear, but improvement is visible within two weeks. Although an eyebrow lift does not stop aging, the result is very long-lasting. As time passes, you may need to have the procedure repeated.

Safety

All surgical procedures carry some risk. Possible complications from an eyebrow lift include injury to the nerve that raises the eyebrow (very rare), bleeding, infection, numbness or itching of the forehead and scalp, and a small amount of hair loss in the scalp incisions.
