About Erbium Laser Skin Resurfacing

Erbium laser skin resurfacing removes superficial lines to moderately deep wrinkles by removing the outer skin layers and stimulating collagen. The erbium laser is a minimally invasive treatment that may also help treat acne scars and sun damage. The laser targets water in the skin and vaporizes cells while heating the underlying dermis to stimulate elastin production.
Erbium laser skin resurfacing is similar to microdermabrasion or microlaser peel, but the erbium laser delivers more effective results. A typical peel treatment only removes the external layer of the skin, while the erbium laser reaches the dermis of the skin to enhance collagen production deep within skin cells. (1)

- Reduced appearance of acne scars
- Enhanced skin tightening

Preparation

- Protect your skin from sun exposure for four weeks before treatment
- Avoid any active retinoids in your skin care routine two weeks before treatment
- Exfoliate at least one week before the start of your treatment
- Stop taking blood-thinning medication
- Arrange a ride back home
- Cease tobacco and nicotine use
- Increase water intake for optimal hydration
- Avoid any form of alcohol consumption at least one week before treatment
Procedure

Dr. Doumit will use a handheld laser device to deliver precise and controlled energy pulses to the targeted tissue. As these pulses reach the skin, they remove the damaged superficial layers. During this process, the underlying tissues absorb the heat, which stimulates collagen production. Most patients describe this as a non-painful, warm, and tingling sensation on the skin. (2) Dr. Doumit repeats this process several times until the erbium laser effectively reduces the targeted blemishes, and collagen growth begins.
The treatment lasts anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour, depending on the complexity of your skin concerns and whether it is a partial or full-body treatment.
Recovery
Your recovery process will vary depending on the extent of the treatment. Directly after the procedure, you may feel as if you have a sunburn, and minor shedding and itchiness may persist. During the first three days, your skin will be red and swollen, but petroleum jellies and balms can help alleviate discomfort. Dr. Doumit advises avoiding direct sun exposure and wearing sunscreen as your skin heals. By the fifth day, your skin will begin to peel, and the new skin layer will emerge. It is crucial to let your skin peel and flake on its own without picking at it to prevent scarring. After a week, most patients can return to work, and if they desire, apply mineral-based makeup. From the second week and beyond, you may notice your skin looks pink and sensitive as the new collagen forms, but this will transform into youthful, smooth, and vibrant-looking skin.
Results
Erbium laser skin resurfacing offers long-lasting skin rejuvenation by smoothing fine lines and wrinkles, reversing sun damage, reducing acne scars, enhancing collagen production, and more. Erbium laser results can last for several years, and at times, even longer with a proper and consistent skin care regimen. Many patients are able to see significant improvements after a single session. However, two to four treatments often allow for deeper, more substantial results.
Corresponding Procedures
Intense Pulsed Light
Intense pulsed light therapy is a non-invasive light treatment that reduces hyperpigmentation, rejuvenates the skin, and treats rosacea and acne. By using multiple light wavelengths, it targets below the skin’s surface, stimulating collagen production and shrinking blood vessels to improve signs of aging, skin elasticity, enlarged pores, and more. Pairing this treatment with erbium laser skin resurfacing addresses surface color irregularities, wrinkles, and enhances skin tightening.
Hyaluronic Acid (HA) fillers
Hyaluronic Acid (HA) fillers are hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers that add volume and increase hydration. Hyaluronic Acid (HA) fillers offers a smooth, volumized appearance with its gel-like texture, while Hyaluronic Acid (HA) fillers offers a firmer and more structured look using a granular texture to revitalize the lips. Together, fillers and the erbium laser offer highly effective facial rejuvenation.
